How Learning and Development Can Help Canadian Businesses Navigate Tariffs

Canadians have long cherished our deep connections with American clients, partners, and friends. As a Canadian Learning and Development (L&D) business, we have collaborated on many successful projects with our U.S. counterparts.

Unfortunately, the sudden imposition of tariffs now casts a shadow over this generations-long relationship, threatening not only the L&D sector but many industries. Like most business owners, I see this as a losing proposition for both nations. While the situation may not align with the reality we want, it is a reality we must respond to. And part of that response must be helping Canadian businesses navigate tariffs and expand export opportunities.

Nations become strong by turning challenges into opportunities

As we prepare for the challenges ahead, it’s vital to recognize that resilience is woven into the very fabric of Canadian identity. Canada has faced formidable obstacles throughout its history and has always emerged stronger. This moment is no different. Rather than waiting for the storm to pass, we must proactively pivot from our reliance on the United States as our dominant trading partner.

Strategies like diversifying our markets, investing in skill development, and reimagining our supply chains are not just prudent; they’re essential for our survival and prosperity. It won’t happen overnight. But there is no better time than the present to get the ball rolling.

A recent quote from Dave Mackay, CEO of the Royal Bank of Canada, captured this optimistic mindset:

“On a personal note, I believe this is the moment to unite the country behind a long-term economic agenda—one that boosts competitiveness and drives prosperity for all. The world wants what Canada can provide in great abundance. We can feed and fuel the growing world and be a leader in energy, agriculture, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, and technology.”

Mackay called for removing internal trade barriers, the speedy approval of major energy projects, the support of homegrown innovation, and an investment in Canada’s most promising engines of economic growth.

We wholeheartedly echo Dave Mackay’s vision. We also believe that L&D can play a transformative role in helping Canadians navigate tariffs. But let’s be honest: Canada faces a serious productivity challenge that must be addressed. The good news is that L&D can play a decisive role in meeting both imperatives—if we focus on five key strategies.

1. Helping Canadian businesses navigate tariffs begins with redoubling our investment in skills development

Investing in skills development is critical for Canadians to maintain adaptability and resilience in an evolving economic landscape. This includes upskilling and reskilling to meet the demands of emerging industries and changing job roles due to shifts in trade dynamics.

It’s also critical that Canadian workers receive training in the skills required in today’s global markets. For example, Redwood has recently developed and produced a powerful simulation that trains emergent professionals in the human skills employers value most. CareerForce Skills is distributed in partnership with the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE). The program trains team members to think critically, collaborate, empathize, and communicate.

2. Canada must apply targeted L&D programs to boost economic resilience through trade

L&D initiatives can strengthen our economic resilience by equipping individuals and businesses with essential knowledge and tools to tackle specific economic challenges. For example, a few years ago, Redwood worked with what is now the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade to develop training on conducting offshore business, including cultural nuances, strategic planning, and global trading dynamics.

Enhancing skills training within the Canadian industries most affected by tariffs—manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and energy, is also critical. These sectors are rapidly transforming, and we need to lead the transformation, not follow it.

3. Canada must double down on innovation and entrepreneurship

Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship through targeted L&D programs can empower Canadians to seize new business opportunities. Every day, Canada proves it can create cutting-edge products and services that compete with the world’s best.

Let’s build on this strength by investing in cutting-edge training in entrepreneurial and commercialization skills. It’s not a quick fix but must become a national priority. Remember, we rank among the most educated populations on the planet. We can do this!

4. Canada must train the world’s most flexible and productive workforce

L&D can enhance workforce flexibility by providing diverse skill training, enabling workers to transition smoothly between sectors. This adaptability is crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of job losses in industries under tariff pressure.

Canada can increase productivity and efficiency by upskilling workers in AI, lean manufacturing, and automation. Optimizing processes and data analytics must also play a key role. Increased productivity will ensure we can manage tariff costs while remaining competitive.

5. Canada must offer unprecedented support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)

Well-designed L&D programs can assist SMEs in navigating changing market conditions, exploring new opportunities, and bolstering competitiveness. Relevant training can include digital marketing strategies, export techniques, and supply chain management.

In these challenging times, let’s seize the opportunity to adapt, innovate, and fortify Canada’s economic future. If we stand together, we can emerge on the other side as a much more competitive force on the global stage.

And could there be a better way to strengthen our resolve than closing this blog with a quote from Mark Carney upon becoming Canada’s 24th Prime Minister?

We have to do extraordinary things…together, we have to build things that we’ve never imagined…at a pace we would have never believed possible.

So, let’s embrace that spirit, seize this moment, and let L&D lead the way!
